Wool trousers, dress pants, slacks, whatever you want to call them, I’m going call them wool trousers from this point forward, are an essential item, because they are the perfect middle ground between casual pants, like jeans and chinos, and a suit. They’re also great because they look amazing on every single body type, whether you’re big and tall or short and slim. Before we get into it, I want to clear the air about something, because it’s really important for you to understand.
From this point forward, when I am referring to wool trousers, I’m only talking about the thicker, heavier weight wool trousers. You should only have thicker wool trousers, because not only does it lay cleaner on the legs, but it doesn’t wrinkle, and it pairs great with other heavier-weighted items like a V-neck sweater, leather jacket, basically a lot of the other items that I’ve talked about already. Lightweight wool trousers, like suit pants, look flimsy and odd when paired with anything outside of a suit jacket because the fabric weights don’t mesh well.
Alright, so now that we’ve got that covered, let’s move on should your wool trousers have a pleat or not? I don’t care how old or young you are, what your body type is, you should never, ever have pleats in your pants. I hate them. They are horrible. They are not flattering on anyone and it basically makes you look like you have this extra stomach fat underneath right here. It’s terrible. No pleats, please. What colors should you get? Well, I would definitely recommend having at least two wool trousers in your wardrobe.
- My first choice would have to be charcoal or a dark grey and the reason being is because it is a great color that goes with everything in your wardrobe.
- Then my second choice would be a navy, but if navy is not available, and then go with a dark brown.
Now I’m sure some of you guys are wondering, “Well, what about black?” Black is definitely not something I would recommend, because it’s very hard to pull off, and it’s just so dark and heavy and it tends to make me look like a waiter. To avoid a headache altogether, and go with my other color choices.
How should your wool trousers fit?
So what are the best ways to wear your wool trousers? If you’re one of my clients, I’d style you in this Oxford button-down shirt, underneath a crew neck sweater, slap on a cool watch, throw on some wool trousers, of course, and top it all off with some Oxford dress shoes. For this next outfit, I’d put you in a turtleneck sweater, with a wool overcoat thrown on top of it, wool trousers, and finish with Oxford dress shoes. So those are some of the different ways I’d style you in wool trousers.
